Manager Neal Ardley has said he took his time over the signing of former Millwall left back Jack Smith.

Speaking to the Official Site following the capture of the former Championship defender, Ardley explained that once he knew he was available, he spent time considering the position and the strengths he wanted in a player, and ultimately the 30 year old former colleague fitted the bill.

Smith came through Watford’s youth system and made his breakthrough to their first team when Ardley and assistant gaffer Neil Cox were both at Vicorage Road, and having now got over 250 Football League appearances to his name with further spells with Swindon and Millwall, the gaffer believes he is exactly the sort of quality we wanted to attract this summer.

‘It’s a signing that we’ve taken our time with and we’ve looked at different options to fit the qualities that we wanted. We know Jack well from Watford days and he has played a lot of his career at a higher level. He is deceptively quick and has got a really relaxed, calm way about him.’

Ardley goes on to say that he feels he’s also a very good ‘one on one’ defender, and being two footed is always a bonus.

‘Jack is a good decision maker and that’s the key to his position. He played for Millwall in central midfielder too so he is technically very good.’

The gaffer admits that it’s taken a few weeks to bring this deal to it’s conclusion, but now it has been signed and sealed he couldn’t be happier.
