Manager Neal Ardley has said he can’t be too critical of the team following Hartlepool’s fight back and victory in the game yesterday because he knows our efforts and hardwork in the first half didn’t produce the results they should’ve done because he thinks we should’ve gone into the half time break with a good two, if not three or more, lead.

Speaking to the Official Site following the two one loss he explained.

‘I am going to take the disappointment because it was another home game against a team down there and that was something we could not see through last season. I thought this group would be able to turn that on its head and at half time we were on the way to doing that. When you look back on it, we could have scored four or five goals. We’ve got a group of good players who will score goals, but they didn’t today and we cannot use that as an excuse.’

Ardley goes on to say that he won’t be too critical of them though, but he acknowledges some of the performance levels weren’t quite what you’d expect and nor were they what should be expected from the players – but everybody has an off day, those concerned are disappointed themselves, so his job is to build them back up again, not simply hit them when they are down as that’s counter productive and there are lots of games left to make up for this.

Going on to credit the effort of the substitutes who came on, Harry Pell and Kevin Sainte-Luce, he says that during our difficult spell in the second period he didn’t feel enough players were trying to lead by example, but both of those two certainly did and gave us good renewed energy on the pitch which he was very pleased with.

‘One thing I want is for our subs to be really at it when they come on and almost make me question my team selection. That has not really been the case so far.’
