AFC Wimbledon have failed in their bid to land Dover Athletic striker Adam Birchall the prolific striker signing for Gillingham instead.

With Swindon Town also in the hunt it had been expected that it was a two way fight between the Dons and Swindon with Gillingham’s initial bid being described as a ‘joke’ by Dover chairman Jim Parmenter.

However it would appear Birchall’s preferred option was Gillinghamall along whcih means he can stay close to his roots in Kent.

He told Kent News: “It`s a special feeling,” there`s nothing quite like playing in the Football League for the biggest local team around. It`s a pleasure to play for them and I`m really excited.’

Birchall now joins Dons hero Danny Kedwell at Priestfields and also joins up with his former Dover Athletic manager Andy Hessenthaler.
