Manager Neal Ardley has said that last night’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy first round victory over Southend United on penalties has given the club it’s pride back.

Wimbledon have suffered two successive defeats on home soil and the gaffer was adamant that we’d bring that to end last night and although we achieved that, it was in unlikely penalty spot fashion.

Of course, being down to ten men also gave the game an additional edge.

Speaking to the Official Site following our 4-2 shootout, the gaffer said.

‘I went home on Saturday and beat myself up because I thought I got it wrong and made decisions that cost us the game. We obviously needed to freshen players up and we put a different team out. Win, lose or draw, we wanted to learn about our squad but we produced a performance that puts a bit of pride back into the shirt.’

Ardley says that he felt at full time the fans could go home thinking ‘that’s what we’re about’ having been pleased with what they saw, especially from the youngsters given a chance in the game such as Academy products Tom Beere and Ben Harrison who he felt were fantastic on the evening, and for him they were the icing on the cake.

‘I want to put a good enough team together that will help these players through. The way we stayed in the game and battled away was great. Everyone put in a fantastic shift and it was a really pleasing night for everyone.’

With the game going to penalties, Ardley said that he told the players they had nothing to lose so not to worry about it and just hit them as well as they could, pick a spot and smile and thankfully for us, it worked out better than it did for them.
