AFC Wimbledon’s pre-Christmas visit to Newport fell foul of the weather just hours before kick off today.

Heavy rain this week had left Newport’s Rodney Parade pitch struggling to cope, a pitch inspection was set for midday today and following this the referee decided that the pitch was unplayable and the decision was made to call the game off!

An improvement to Newport’s drainage system was meant to be done before the season kicked off, but this wasn’t able to be the case and will be finished when the season ends so I’d imagine the Welsh side could see further postponements this season?

This kind of thing can’t be helped but what I’d question is the decision to wait until midday to do an inspection. Many fans would have been well on the way to Wales by that time, if the game couldn’t go ahead at that point you’d have to wonder if a decision couldn’t have been made sooner….
