Wimbledon’s return to a new Stadium at Plough Lane has moved a step further after planning application was this week submitted.

A proposal for an 11,000-capacity stadium, that would have the ability to be expanded to 20,000 in the future, at the site of Wimbledon Greyhound Stadium has been put forward to Merton Council.

Chief executive Erik Samuelson told the official website that this was ‘the culmination of 18 months’ intensive work’ with the ‘comprehensive proposal covering every aspect of the development and associated issues’

He has stressed though that, having taken into account feedback from a summer of consultation with the public, that patience will be needed: ‘The detailed feedback from the consultation is contained in the planning application and will be available when the plans are verified by the council.

‘We ask everyone to be patient for a little longer before the details can be shared in a few weeks’ time.’

Part of this application includes the construction of ‘600 residential units’, in a project carried out with Galliard Homes. Retail and commercial space is also planned for a leisure club.

Could a return to the Plough Lane area, our spiritual home that we were forced to leave (our original home is now a residential development) in 1991, really be close to fruition….
