Manager Neal Ardley was delighted with Wimbledon’s resilient display against Southend last night as we picked up all three points.

Speaking to the Official Site after a one nil win thanks to a George Francomb goal, Ardley had to admit that we rode our luck at points and we’re certainly hanging on by a thread at others, but our work rate saw us through.

‘We can play better and it was backs to the wall at times. We talked during a meeting in the hotel about Southend’s strengths, we knew they would be dangerous and the players took responsibility for how they were going to deal with that and they did it.’

Ardley says the main plan was to stop them at ‘source’ and press high up the pitch to try and harry them into mistakes and although he feels we were the better team for the opening 20 minutes, after that they started picking us off and ended the first half on top. Again then he felt we started brightly but after the first 15 or so minutes, they again got a foothold and started to dictate but it just meant really we had to put in a fantastic defensive display and that’s what the lads did.

‘We had to take a lot of pressure, but we stayed strong defensively and defender very well. James Shea also made some brilliant saves. With the players we’ve got I always feel we will get one or two chances and we did.’

Ardley adds that he feels we could’ve got another goal once we had scored, but overall he just has to be delighted with the effort and determination of the team and all three points.

That is now two wins from three but the gaffer was quick to say nobody should be getting carried away because there is such a long way to go, but of course the confidence we can take from our start – given what we need to improve on is obvious – bodes very well moving forward and with a new team in effect, a winning mentality at this stage is fantastic whilst players continue bedding in at the club.
