At times all you can do is offer up an apology, even if it’s not entirely your fault!

That’s what Neal Ardley was left doing following a defeat on Saturday afternoon.

AFC Wimbledon went into the meeting with Bristol Rovers in good form but this counted for nothing with us resoundingly beaten 3-0….

Not only were we beaten, we were often second best against a struggling Bristol Rovers side and that wasn’t good enough with the standards that have been set of late not reached at all.

Ardley felt he had to offer up an apology to the 572 travelling Dons fans.

He told the Dons Player: ‘I apologise to the fans because we were poor today. We prepared the players in training for this sort of game. We knew what Bristol would be about with their set-pieces and winning the second balls. We let our standards slip and I must apologise to the fans that made the trip.’

Not even an improved second half was worthy of praise, and he didn’t give any to his players.

He knows that as the boss the buck stops with him, but didn’t want the players to be getting off the hook at all mind!

Ardley added: ‘I am not going to praise our second-half performance because we were not good enough today. I changed the tactics in the first-half, but the players let the staff and the fans down. Ultimately, I have to take the rap for that. It is hard to take the rap when the players do not produce the givens that we prepared them for.’

Perhaps a refereeing decision or two went against us but overall we were the architects of our own downfall….
