29/08/2009: OXFORD UNITED remain top of the Blue Square Premier after an unfortunate own goal and a missed penalty sent AFC Wimbledon to a 1-0 defeat at Kingsmeadow.

A crowd of over 4,000 packed into Kingsmeadow Stadium on Saturday for AFC Wimbledon’s eagerly-anticipated match against the Blue Square Football Conference Premier leaders Oxford United, but an own goal after 50 minutes from Dons defender Jay Conroy gave the high-flying visitors a narrow victory, and meant Terry Brown’s side slip from fourth to seventh in the table.

Wimbledon had a number of chances and went close to drawing level in the second period when Damian Batt brought down Paul Lorraine in the penalty area, but Dons forward Danny Kedwell had his penalty saved by Ryan Clarke.

The home side piled on the pressure in the closing stages but could not find a goal, and Oxford held out for their fourth consecutive win and another three points, while results eleswhere moved Wimbledon out of the play-off places.
